Gulf Coast Lactation is here for you. Our mission is to increase the number of mothers who are successful at breastfeeding. We believe that this is the first step in improving the health of our children and mothers and, so, our community and nation. Let’s breastfeed together!
According to the national Centers for Disease Control (CDC), among infants born in 2019, most (83.2%) started out receiving some breast milk, and 78.6% were receiving some breast milk at 1 month. At 6 months, 55.8% of infants received some breast milk and 24.9% received breast milk exclusively. Despite the recommendation that babies breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months, less than 45% were exclusively breastfeeding at 3 months. The rate of exclusively breastfed babies drops to 24% by 6 months. In Alabama, only 37.7% of moms are still breastfeeding at 6 months and only 21% are exclusively breastfeeding. Let’s change these numbers!
Despite the compelling evidence and ongoing initiatives, there is very limited support for breastfeeding moms in Southeastern Alabama. We are here to address this gap, teach safe and effective breastfeeding techniques, and to provide support during this vulnerable time. That is why we offer three types of appointments, for all mothers: prenatal, postpartum and telemedicine(video) appointments. We are here for you whether you are still pregnant, baby is in your arms, or home bound.
Prenatal appointments help you prepare for breastfeeding before baby arrives! At your appointment you will be prepared for breastfeeding, learning ahead of time how to: latch, establish a good milk supply, know which pump is best for you, and more. We will answer your questions about breastfeeding and make sure that you are ready to begin your journey!
Postpartum appointments help you set a normal and healthy breastfeeding routine for you and baby. At your appointment you will learn how to: latch without pain, establish a good milk supply, know if your baby is getting enough milk, and what problems are present. You will be assigned your personal breastfeeding plan!
Telemedicine(video) appointments cover all of the above. Whether you are pregnant, or baby is here, you can have a video appointment. Have a busy schedule? Don’t feel comfortable leaving the house? Want to meet us online first? Schedule your video appointment today!
Thank you for joining us on our mission: we look forward to working with you as you begin or continue your breastfeeding journey!
